Stogumber Shop is an invaluable asset in such a small village. We like to describe our beautiful tranquil village as nestling between the Quantock Hills and the Brendon Hills with boundaries stretching into Exmoor National Park, far from the madding crowd and idyllic. All too easily it could be completely cut off from the outside world as there is no bus service unless you can walk out the three miles to the main road.
Currently situated in the village square, (with parking usually available right outside) and across the road from the church and adjacent to the pub it is the focal point of village life.
It is packed to the rafters with everything under the sun- rather like an Aladdin’s Cave. Stogumber Shop offers daily newspapers, fresh food, store cupboard food and household items, all sorts of essential miscellaneous items, bird seed, plants, alcohol- you name it, it is there somewhere! It is run by a band of willing volunteers who totally understand the importance of this hub of social contact for elderly residents or those with young families.
In addition, we are extremely lucky that within the shop there is a post office which provides essential additional services such as banking, bill paying, electricity top ups and cash.
To be successful Stogumber Shop needs to be sustainable which means economically successful, environmentally friendly and recognised for the important social impact it has in Stogumber over time. As the mantra goes ‘Use it or lose it’. It has to stock a balance of items that people want to buy, can afford to buy and would want to buy.
To that end the range of stock is wide so that there are basics as well as outstanding local produce with a very low carbon footprint. Being able to support local small businesses which produce environmentally-friendly products is something we are proud of. Being able to support the local food bank is also something we are proud of.
We want everyone in the village to be able to shop here and not just for top-up items they have forgotten at the supermarket. There will be promotions which regular customers will be able to take advantage of, and so despite the notion that local shopping is more expensive than supermarket shopping that is not always true. Also because so much produce is local and fresh, the shelf life is long and the nutritional value of the food excellent.
